Story of the Dundee Open

Background

After the successful running of a small Foil 48er, two former Wallace Fencing Academy students, James Ferguson & Calum Mcghee decided to start the Dundee Open in the hope of bringing back larger-scale competition to the city. The plan is to host a three-weapon unranked open in early June, with the invaluable support of the team behind the Glasgow Open and bring in as many fencers from around the country as possible.

Prizes

This competition comes with a unique prize for the top fencer in each category, along with medals for the top four, each overall victor will receive a bespoke Devlin Watch, built to be a robust partner to any fencer and will be engraved with the competition, year and category. There will also be a custom build trophy for the best overall team.

Dundee

Dundee’s fencing scene has been severely reduced since COVID, with independent clubs closing and only the University Club remaining. Student-led efforts have established the competition Dee-Fence, which continues to grow. The Dundee Open aims to build on this momentum, growing interest in fencing locally while helping lay the foundations for the opening of Dundee Fencing Club later this year, carrying the competition forward.

Legacy

The Dundee Open aims to bring together fencers from across the country, promote fencing in Dundee, and restore a competitive spirit in the city. All event profits will support both Dundee University fencing club & the creation of Dundee Fencing Club, ensuring a lasting impact beyond a single weekend.
